ABOUT THE ARTIST
With buoys at Higgins Beach in Scarborough Maine
I grew up in coastal New England, first in Connecticut, then in and around Boston before finally settling along the coast of Maine more than 20 years ago. Here I'm surrounded by beautiful beaches, rocky coastlines, lush marshes and breathtaking sea and landscapes. It’s no surprise that coastal life and the changing seasons are the inspiration for much of my work. I endeavor to capture the immense beauty around me, in the best way I know how, with paint on canvas. When the weather turns cold, I turn my focus to still-life painting in the warmth of my home studio. I have an expanding (some might say overflowing) collection of interesting and fun objects to paint from. My goal with my still-life painting is to strike a balance somewhere between detailed realism and a painterly representation of it. I especially like tackling objects with interesting texture, transparency or reflective qualities.
My road to becoming a full-time artist began when I was very young and includes having been raised by scientist parents who gave me a keen eye for observation, a love for nature and the tools and opportunity to explore my deep desire to create art. I also credit an artist grandmother whose work and talent motivated me from my earliest years. Nonetheless, I went off to school for a non art-related education and while I enjoyed my early career in the business world, I always imagined a future where I would one day have my own art studio and spend my days creating art. A move to Maine in 1999 finally allowed for that (though the studio would come years later after three kids were raised and their playroom was no longer needed.) I've been painting ever since and have found both success and reward in doing what I was ultimately meant to do.
In 2020, I was honored to have been selected as one of 75 Noteworthy Maine Artists for Maine Home and Design Magazine’s annual Art Maine Guide. My work has been accepted into numerous juried art shows and has sold to collectors throughout the United States. I am also a member of Oil Painters of America.
I hope that my paintings evoke a fond memory or recognition of a similar experience, observation or interest and also, that my work is a reminder to look for the simple beauty and joy in everyday life. For me, that can even come in the form of a colorful little leaf that fell from a tree or a discarded pink gift bow. Though I am undeniably fortunate to live in a naturally stunning location, I have always found snippets of unique beauty wherever I have been.
When I’m not creating art and managing my business, I kayak and boat in summer, ski and walk the beach in winter, and explore the outdoors year-round. I enjoy photography and I happily take advantage of the incredible food and art scene in nearby Portland. Above all, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
